Project Overview:
The Riverways II project aims to facilitate water tourism in Latvia and Estonia by developing innovative and inclusive solutions for accessing and using recreational waters, routes, and water-based products. The project focuses on ensuring that water tourism is accessible to all target groups, including people with disabilities, seniors, and families with children, while also supporting sustainable infrastructure that helps control and reduce the anthropogenic impact of recreational activities.
The project builds on knowledge and experience gained from previous initiatives, including the Est–Lat RIVERWAYS project (2013–2015) and the Lat–Lit WaterWays project (2023–2025). By expanding the cross-border water tourism network and addressing the changing profile of water tourism users, the project responds to the growing demand for accessible, multifunctional infrastructure and integrated services that support the full customer journey. As a pilot activity, 17 infrastructure objects will be developed in Latvia and Estonia to improve access and create joint social innovation solutions for water tourism.
Project Objective:
Facilitate water tourism in Latvia and Estonia by expanding the cross-border tourism product www.riverways.eu and focusing on innovative solutions for accessing and using recreational waters, routes, and products for all target groups, while supporting sustainable infrastructure that reduces the environmental impact of recreational activities.
Key Results:
- A solution for improved and accessible waterfront access.
- A solution for accessible outdoor water-based tourism products.
The solution for waterfront access will be taken up by all project investment partners. Accessible multifunctional sites and piers will initially be implemented by selected partners and further up-scaled by others. Both solutions will also be adopted by at least two external organisations: NGO Apeirons in Latvia and the Estonian Chamber of People with Disabilities in Estonia.
The expected change includes increased awareness of social inclusion and social responsibility among local authorities, businesses, and stakeholders involved in water tourism, expanded access to water tourism activities for all target groups, and an overall increase in visitors to the programme area, supporting tourism, local economies, and entrepreneurship.
