HOW

Project Overview:

The HOW project addresses the decline of traditional logboat‑building knowledge in Estonia and Latvia. Logboat traditions are deeply rooted in both countries but are at risk due to limited modern‑day practice. The project raises awareness, promotes cooperation and offers hands‑on opportunities for communities to explore, practice and preserve this shared cultural heritage.

Project Objective

The project aims to preserve and promote the shared heritage of logboat traditions while strengthening cross‑border relationships. Communities in Vana‑Võromaa, Soomaa and Vidzeme will improve their practical skills, deepen their understanding of the cultural importance of waterways and enhance cooperation between heritage keepers across the border.

Key Activities

• Joint study trips to museums to document archaeological findings and understand logboat cultural history
• Joint poster exhibition involving communities to highlight logboat traditions
• Joint logboat‑building workshops in Estonia and Latvia for creating simple and expanded logboats
• Joint heritage journeys navigating historical waterways
• Final seminar and experience‑exchange event bringing communities together

Expected Results:

• Communities acquire practical logboat‑building skills
• Greater awareness of the historical and cultural significance of logboats
• Strengthened cross‑border ties between heritage practitioners and local organisations
• Hands‑on community engagement through workshops, journeys and exhibitions

Cross‑Border Cooperation Aspect

The project is jointly created and implemented by Estonian and Latvian partners. Activities take place in both countries with equal participation. Through shared planning, joint workshops and heritage journeys, the project reinforces cultural connections and supports logboat traditions as a shared heritage rather than a national one.
