Project Overview:
Estonia and Latvia share vulnerable lake ecosystems increasingly threatened by eutrophication and the rapid spread of the invasive zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha). The Blue Revival project introduces innovative nature‑based solutions (NBS) to restore the ecological health of Lake Peipsi in Estonia and Lake Burtnieks in Latvia.
The project pilots new approaches for removing zebra mussels while utilising their natural filtration capacity beforehand. In Estonia, mussels are collected together with abandoned fishing nets, reducing pollution and bycatch risks. In Latvia, rope‑line systems allow mussel colonisation in the water column, after which mussels are harvested before reproduction to prevent further spread and remove nutrients.
The project also explores circular‑economy opportunities, including turning mussel biomass into fertilizer, animal feed or other value‑added products. By combining research, municipal cooperation and NGO participation, Blue Revival strengthens cross‑border knowledge exchange and supports wider application of sustainable lake‑restoration methods.
Project Objective
To enhance biodiversity and improve water quality in Lakes Peipsi and Burtnieks by implementing nature‑based restoration solutions, jointly developing Dreissena removal and valorisation methods, and reducing eutrophication through permanent nutrient extraction.
Key Activities
- Designing and testing improved mussel‑collection solutions tailored to each lake, including abandoned‑net retrieval in Estonia and rope‑line systems in Latvia.
- Conducting pilot restoration actions with ecological monitoring of water quality, benthic fauna and nutrient‑removal efficiency.
- Developing valorisation methods to convert harvested mussels into fertilizer, animal feed or protein‑based products.
- Organising workshops, public events, study visits and an international conference to share knowledge and raise awareness.
Expected Results:
- Two jointly developed mussel‑collection solutions successfully tested and available for wider use.
- One validated valorisation solution demonstrating the potential of mussel biomass reuse.
- Strengthened cross‑border cooperation among at least five organisations working on lake ecosystem restoration.
- Improved ecological conditions in pilot lakes, including reduced nutrient levels and better water clarity.
- Increased community awareness of eutrophication, invasive species management and circular‑economy opportunities.
