BioFloat

Floating islands as biodiversity pit stops and pollution cut outs towards more resilient cities.

Project objective and activities:

The objective is to preserve biodiversity richness and restore the quality of water ecosystems in urban areas by co-creating and piloting 3 innovative green infrastructure elements involving target groups from Estonia and Latvia. A ready-to-use, well-tested and socially promoted solution - BioFloat floating islands concept will be designed according to municipalities' needs and will contribute to a more sustainable and resilient program area.

The approach is to build floating islands (2 in Latvia and 1 in Estonia) and place them in a human-impacted environment, i.e., lake or pond in the city or nearby city with explicit anthropogenic impact. The floating islands will be developed, installed and piloted as a part of city green infrastructure with a particular function: to enhance biodiversity in the impacted environment (birds and invertebrates - insects); to mitigate anthropogenic pollution (e.g., microplastics, organic contaminants, heavy metals); to raise awareness about urban green infrastructure as a refuge for biodiversity in the city.
