FireStop

Development of low environmental impact fire retardants for wood.

Project objective and activities:

The overall objective is to jointly develop sustainable and low environmental impact fire retardant to be used in wooden buildings and timber in general, suitable both exterior and interior use and by industrial and home users. Thanks to the project competitiveness of two SME-s - MultiPro Systems from Estonia and BBidea from Latvia will be increased. The boost will be achieved as a result of a cross-border knowledge transfer between three universities and two SMEs. An efficient and low environmental impact fire retardant is in demand not only by the participating SMEs, but by the whole wood and timber industry in the Baltics. Developing fire retardants that meet the high requirements of efficiency, durability, sustainability, low toxicity and price, is a complex and challenging task that requires diverse competencies of the partners.

Main activities of the project will be:

  • Development of fire-retardant formulations
  • Measuring and evaluation of reaction to fire performance of different fire-retardant treated wood products
  • Evaluation of sustainability and ecotoxicity
  • Piloting and testing the developed product(s) in industrial environment
  • Communication
